From Scraps to Statement Pieces: Giving Leather Offcuts a Second Life
Beautiful leather deserves to be used. All of it.
When you make leather goods by hand, there will always be pieces left over.
A wallet might leave behind an awkward little corner. A bag might produce a strip that's too narrow for another project. A belt might leave a shaped piece that simply isn't large enough to become something else.
But these aren't scraps in the traditional sense. They are still beautiful, high-quality leather. And at Morgan + Wells, we don't like throwing beautiful materials away.
Turning offcuts into something beautiful

Our leather earrings began, in part, from a simple question:
What can we do with the smaller pieces of leather left behind from making our other products?
The answer was jewellery.
Leather is particularly well suited to earrings because it is incredibly lightweight. It allows us to create interesting shapes, textures and statement designs without the heaviness you can sometimes get with larger earrings made from other materials.
So pieces of leather that might otherwise have been destined for the bin can become something completely different - a pair of earrings that can be worn and enjoyed for years.

Every pair is a little bit different
One of the things we love about working with natural leather is that no two pieces are exactly the same.
Grain, texture, colour and natural variations mean that even when we make the same design, each pair has its own character.
They're cut in small batches, assembled and finished by hand, making use of pieces of leather that already exist rather than requiring a completely new piece of hide for every batch.
Why leather makes brilliant earrings
There's the obvious reason first:
They're wonderfully light.
If you love statement earrings but don't enjoy feeling like you're wearing something heavy, leather is a brilliant alternative, and it's bio-degradable too!
It moves beautifully as well. Rather than sitting rigidly against the ear, lightweight leather has a softness and movement that makes larger designs surprisingly easy to wear.
And because we're using beautiful quality leather, they're not simply a compromise because they're lightweight. The texture and depth of the material are part of the design.

A more thoughtful approach to making
For us, sustainability isn't about making a product and then adding the word sustainable to the label.
It's about looking at the way we make things in the first place.
We work in small batches. We use traditional leatherworking techniques. We choose our materials carefully. And wherever possible, we look for ways to make better use of the materials already in our workshop.
Using leather offcuts for earrings is one small part of that zero-waste approach.
It means a piece of leather from one Morgan + Wells product can have another life as something completely different.
A little less waste. A little more creativity.

Made in Yorkshire
Every pair of Morgan + Wells leather earrings is made by hand in our workshop in Yorkshire.
We don't mass produce our jewellery. Instead, we work with the leather we have available, which means colours and combinations can change as our offcuts change.
That makes each collection a reflection of what's happening on the workshop bench.
And we rather like that.
From workshop offcut to favourite pair
There's something satisfying about knowing the story behind an object.
A small piece of leather that might once have been considered waste becomes a pair of earrings. Those earrings are worn to work, out for lunch, on holiday or for an evening out.
Something that might have been discarded gets another chance to be useful.
That's what we love about making leather earrings.
They aren't simply made from leather. They're made from the leather that remains after we've made something else - and given a new purpose.
So next time you're looking for a pair of lightweight statement earrings, take a look at our leather collection and feel good knowing that your earrings have given a beautiful piece of leather a second life.
